Use Your Resources

It all started with a smoothie. Although not a spender by nature, I had decided to buy a Vitamix. I was so excited to make my first smoothie in it. The berries, bananas and a variety of sprinkles all spun around, blending into my breakfast. I poured in into an insulated cup and took a sip through my metal straw. At first it was lovely, then the straw kept getting clogged with small chunks. This was ridiculous. I had spent money for a powerful blender, yet had only turned it on low power for a short amount of time until everything looked blended. I had the resources for a much smoother drink, I just hadn’t used them.

In the four years since then, I can’t count how many times I’ve said to myself, “Use your resources.” Sometimes that prompts me to get out the sidewalk chalk to leave some joy on parking lots or greenways. I usually draw smiles, hearts and flowers. If there’s no one around I’ve been known to write out haikus. In a short amount of time, using what I already own, I can spread joy.

I’ve recently started hosting one day retreats at a beautiful venue close by, and have given a lot of thought to making them lovely while using what I already own. White sheets serve as tablecloths, empty spice containers become vases, and jam jars are used for glasses. I had mentioned to a good friend and fellow thrifter that I’d been looking for clear, glass plates to use at the retreats. That afternoon she found 8 for $8. Yes, friends become personal shoppers.

I’m fortunate to live by a greenway that leads to a lake, and to own a yoga mat, jump rope and a chin up bar. However, there’s such a difference between owning and using. At times I’ve left the jump rope draped over a dining room chair as a reminder. For a while I was in the habit of doing a chin up before my coffee, and whenever I’m out on the greenway I wish I spent more time there.

The stories could go on and on, perhaps segueing into a message about donating what you’re not using so someone else can. I do in fact have a pile of things that will be dropped off at the thrift store this week.

Take a moment to look around your home. What resources could you be using to make your life and the lives of others a bit better? Do you have a stack of recipes you’ve been wanting to try? A music collection you haven’t listened to in a while? Greeting cards that could fill mailboxes with love? I’d be delighted to read your responses as to what you’ve found and how you’re using it.
